We all know the allure of your own ‘thing’. It is not only exciting, but also – if properly done – a stable form of income for you. Moreover, we personally applaud your decision to be a job creator instead of a job seeker. So here is our own set of very basic advices to get you up and going.

Have a vision

You might have a business idea in your head, but you need to know where you are going with it. This is called the vision. And it is this vision that helps you set your goals, plan your business and move forward with resilience. Let’s take an example. If you like to run your own clothes shop, then you still need to figure out what exactly are you going to sell and to whom you are going to sell. Are you going to sell for women or young girls? Or for men or young boys? You need to have a clear idea. With this comes the vision – ‘I will provide the most affordable line of clothing in the area’, or ‘I will provide clothing that not only looks good, but also empowers women’. Figuring out what you thus want is very important in making the future decision – your choice of products, service and the manner in which you go about will depend heavily on this.

Know your target market

It is very important to know who your target market is. For an example, if you are selling women’s clothes, is there any age group you are particularly targeting? Will you be selling plus sizes, or branded clothes? In this case the market segment becomes different and a bit more focused. In order to do this, you also need to have a fine understanding of the community you are in, and the population demographics. If your area has a majority of older people as opposed to young, having too many ‘teen’ clothes may not be the best idea. This is the same with other businesses. For an example, if your plan is to offer IT managed services, then you need to know whether there are enough and more opportunities to engage in business.

Market your services

Marketing your services should begin even prior to you launching the business. This way, people are aware of the fact that you are coming up, and may approach you faster. This will save you up the first few months where you not only have to pay the rental for the place, but also with the added task of finding opportunities. So network as much as possible. For an example, offer an innovative IT support, go for functions and events where people looking for such services might come, and approach them. And yeah, be subtle about it in the process.

We do not have to tell you how important the internet is – you are reading this article on the internet and that says a lot. So make sure that you maintain a solid presence online. Have an interactive Facebook page and Twitter account. Be responsive and keep customers engaged.
